Somehow in the Xfce 4.5.91 desktop, the chosen background remains in
place, and compositing works beautifully once activated (xfwm4 allows
on-the-fly de/activation of compositing).  Take a look:

With xfwm4 4.5.91, the window contents are invisible only when the
OpenGL window is active; if the window is inactive (IOW another window
is the active one) or while dragging the window around, the contents are
visible.
