Looking at this more closely, I think you were right after all.  I
didn't realize that it would partially conflict with xinit (startx and
xinitrc).  I can't see a reason to not use the ones from xinit, so your
first suggestion was indeed better, and the other scripts should be
packaged with xinit after all.

If we don't need to set XAPPLRESDIR and friends, and the path is changed
to /usr/bin, then there isn't even what to subsitute with configure.  So
I think I'll roll a new xinit soon with these included.
