Make sure you enter the site address without the trailing /,
e.g. "ftp://sourceware.org/pub/cygwinports" or
"ftp://sources.redhat.com/pub/cygwinports" to use the primary
repository. The setup program is finicky about that.
You also have it typoed as 'ftp::/', not 'ftp://', in
subject line. :)
Alternatively, you can try some of the default mirror links,
substituting "cygwinports" for "cygwin", for those sites that are full
sourceware mirrors. Update times vary, though, so check in ftp browser
that date stamp on setup.bz2 matches the soureware one.
Also, I'm not positive if this is still the policy, but like with main
Cygwin dirs
Redhat may block downloads, providing list only capacity on the main
site
except to mirrors through rsync, so people use the mirrors instead.

Subject: [Cygwin-ports-general] unable to get setup.ini from
<ftp::/sourceware.org> error

Hi;
I was trying to precisely follow the install instructions on
http://sourceware.org/cygwinports/ so as to have a correct and fully
functional CygwinPorts instance.
I am able to get to step 5 when I get an error about pkg not found or
something like that. I try repeatedly over the next couple of days but
the
same problem.
In my "great wisdom" I removed the setup.ini file, thinking that
perhaps
I'll be able to get a fresh one when running cygwin.exe the next time.
No dice.
Now, how to proceed?
I have GnuWin32, but that's still not as good as Cygwin. I'm about
to try
the free and open-source version of the VmWare server again so that I
can
have Linux on my Windows XP laptop, but I think that overwhelmed my poor
laptop drive because every time I've done that in the past, the laptop
drive
went south on me. A vanilla cygwin is just not enough :-(
Help!
