...all I can say is that the problem resurfaced.

I did a clean Cygwin install, added Cygwinports, and installed
gnome-terminal (only).

Calling gnome-terminal gives me the command prompt again. No
terminal, no error message, no nothing.

When I installed several other packages, I suddenly got a
working gnome-terminal, but I was unable to nail down which
package it was.

Doing a clean install again gave me the same problem - gnome-terminal
silently failing.

Apparently there is some dependency missing... any clue what that
might be?
