Where does /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/compiled point? I think the layout from "make install" is correct. The files are /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb, compiled is a link to /etc/X11/xkb, and /etc/X11/xkb just contains a README file. I don't know why the binary distribution is different.
