You are not hanging, but this way to start xwin is not the recommend one.

use either the startxwin.sh or startxwin.bat located in /etc/X11R6/bin and
please take the time to read the FAQ as you will find answers to your next
problems in there ;-)

i'm having touble starting xwin on cygwin. i'm most probably missing
