Lets do it step by step.
Start a xterm
start editres
Menu:Commands|Get Tree
Click on the xterm window
Select vt100 in the tree
Menu:Commands|Show Resource Box
Click with mouse button 2 (the one in the middle) on "color0"
You should see "black" in the window below
Enter text "red"
Click on "Apply"
Thats it. Now what step does not work for you.
