Looks like I did have version -17 (on win98SE). I've just downloaded -18 and that works fine.

That's the one I've got. I updated my cygwin at about 10 a.m GMT today.Get the -18 version that is out today.There was a short-lived -17 version. You must have gotten it. Harold J S wrote:No it's the experimental version I downloaded using the cygwin setup program.
