XA_PRIMARY is what's used by the two largest apps used under X (according to the Unix Hater's Guide): emacs and xterm. I think you'd have a line of people knocking on your door to yell at you if you were even to think about removing the select => paste flow from these apps, or the even worse option of having to select then move the mouse to the taskbar and select some option from a popup menu to paste things. -- -Earle F.
