Thanks for the quick response. I had tried that, but after your suggestion I tried it using a static IP with no change - it simply won't start a remote session.

I have compared the logfile (XWinrl.log) on the system that won't connect to one that does, and except for a line saying that the permissions on the directory should be set to root on the system that DOES connect, there's no difference.

have you tried the -from parameter. It tells the xserver which
ip address it should use for announcing to the xdm server.
