Thank you Igor, It was the sshd-config that was the problem. I've now got gnome-session starting.
Also sorry bout the addresses. I didn't realize that my client was misbehaving that badly. Unfortunatly I don't see any way of turning it off. Time to change to a new client I suppose. (sigh). suggestions?
