I updated the cygwin installation to the latest and greatest except
the xorg packages and xmgrace still ran.

After updating xorg-x11-* from 6.8.2.0-1 to 6.8.99.901-1 I get exactly
the behavior you describe.

Any hints to solve this are appreciated.
