For the mintty test case, yes, you need to set DISPLAY. Use this:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
Yep, that works, except for the following warning:
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
As this method to start xterm seems to work, do I have to start the X
server some other way than I do now? I just use the Win start menu
entry Cygwin-X->XWin Server.
