As someone who _never_ cares about group membership at all (as far as I know), and runs on a network where no domain server will ever respond, can I request that the default setup be carefully considered, if the proposal above would mean me always waiting 1 second, to say nothing of 3 seconds, to launch anything. Should we be considering some form of configuration tool, similar to ssh-host-config, which will set appropriate configuration values for a range of common situations, including the "no domain controller" one? Not sure I can volunteer, as I haven't been following the details up to this point because the functionality is not one I use. ht -- Henry S.
