What I should have asked was for you to do the following:

    $ cd Python-2.1b1
    $ ./python -c 'import distutils.sysconfig; print 
distutils.sysconfig.get_config_vars()["CCSHARED"]'

The above should be valid *even* before any extension is built.  Plus it
executes the python.exe in the build directory instead of the installation
directory.  This is what I was really after.

Do you still get "-DUSE_DL_IMPORT"?
