Overheard on IRC. The nicks have been changed to protect the innocent.
Person A: I wonder how NASA would have handled the PR had the shuttle
audio continued longer, with horrible screaming.
Person B: There's been some discussion on sci.space.shuttle about
whether or not NASA puts a delay in the public audio, to
prevent just such a problem.
Person B: The public would never notice a five second delay, but
that would allow them to hit a big button when they start
hearing wailing about one's legs burning off.
Person B: And if they don't have such a delay, I bet they will now.
Person A: Har!
Person A: So the "Roger, buh..." was actually NASA pulling the plug
before the screaming went out over the air?
Person A: An interesting hypothesis.
Person A: They clearly knew the craft was lost when the communication
cut off, because they immediately instructed everyone to
preserve their data.
Person A: They would not have done that had they expected communications
to resume.
Person B: Perhaps it was really, "Roger, burning up. OH MY FUCKING GOD
THE PAIN!!! Tell my wife and kids I love them. AIIIIIIIEEEEEE
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
