Internet Sting Operation Leads to Recall of
Lighters
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) - About 4,000 novelty lighters that lack
federally-mandated child-resistant mechanisms are being recalled
by its manufacturer.
The items were discovered as part of a Consumer Product Safety
Commission Internet-monitoring operation that seeks out unsafe
products sold via the World Wide Web.
Both CPSC and the manufacturer, California-based Prometheus
International, said they are not aware of any injuries involving the
lighters, but are recalling them as a preventive measure.
The lighters were sold in tobacco stores nationwide from March
1997 through February 1999, and were priced from $50 to $75. The
recalled lighters are the Intruder model, shaped like a miniature
propane or scuba tank, and the Jupiter model, shaped like a gun.
Both are emblazoned with the word "Prometheus."
Consumers should immediately stop using the lighters and return
them to the store where they were purchased for a free
replacement lighter that has a child-resistant mechanism.
For more information, consumers can contact Prometheus at (800)
229-5233 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday.
