Bill Gates's empire has been accused of putting a hidden code in the best-selling word processing program to give US intelligence services access to foreign military and business secrets. The computer giant denied any such arrangement, and experts expressed scepticism at the claim. A report by the French defence ministry claimed that "back-door technology" had been included in Windows software after a deal between Microsoft and the US National Security Agency. The report said: "The security agency has got Microsoft to hire a number of its own agents to ensure that Windows can be used to burglarise these messages.
