ChipCenter Communicator Vol. 2 No. 26

Our lives as EEs are continually getting "softer". Not easier,
mind you, but more and more involved with software. So it's
not surprising that we're populating this week's Communicator
with more software-oriented articles. This week, we have at
least three on topics such as state machines, using software
analysis tools, and algorithms. But software doesn't run in a
vacuum so we've thrown in a couple of hardware items, including
one on the "parts shortage."

ONLINE POLL: RESOURCE, REPOSITORY OR SURVIVOR?
Not all of an EE's working life is like Dilbert's, and not all of
Dilbert's frustrations are in every one of our lives. In your
own area of responsibility at your company, how have your opinions
on fundamental directions been formed?

NEW FRONTIER. Dave Gilbert reviews the history and architectural
heritage of the PowerPC microprocessor, and predicts that its next
foray into the land of lower-end embedded systems will be successful.
But not for the reasons you might guess.

CODE SANITY. Using state machines in your designs makes debugging
your code a lot easier, says Hank Wallace, because bugs are typically
associated with a single state and are therefore easier to locate.

HARDER SOFTWARE. ChipCenter's readers tend to be hardware designers,
but as systems get more and more complex, software analysis can help
designs move faster. Read how in this full-length application article.

NYQUIST REVISITED. If you've worked with DSPs for awhile, you
probably think you know all about sampling. Well, think again because
Matt Perry is looking at sampling from a different perspective.

MYTHS DEBUNKED. Managing a design project to a successful completion
is a real talent. There are many ways to go wrong and only one way
to do it right. Robert Konder tells us how to avoid common pitfalls.
