Which is nonsense. I know many of us were contemplating 10, even 20,
years ago the technologies which Cohen is now freaked out over.
It was even obvious decades ago that individuals would eventually
gain the power to liquidate millions of government thugs and their
collaborators.
And it was obvious--notwithstanding the apparent newfound wonderment
at this turn of events that Cohen's words suggest--that thoughtful
people in the FBI, CIA, DIA, and NSA also realized the inevitability
of this trend.
Hence Clipper. Hence crackdowns on domestic civil liberties. Hence
the race to impose a police state before these Pandora's Box escapees
are too far off the ranch.
Alas, for them, it's way too late. The police state measures are
merely an accelerant.
