Hiya Gary!!!
:For those who haven't been following the controversy on UseNet, Jerry Terranson of
:Missouri
:Freenet is capturing all posts containing the X-No-Archive: Yes header and putting
:them on his
:website in a searchable database.
Also for those of you who haven't been following the "controversy" on
UseNet, this is NOT an anti-privacy issue: this is a Gary Burnore straw
man. Posts that have been made *only* on Usenet, an inherently public
forum, are being archived (ala Deja) based on certain criteria:
(1) The post orginates at a domain known for abuse (Databasix et al)
(2) It contains an X-No-Archive Header
(3) It is amusing enough for me to get a chuckle out of :=)
Mr. Burnore (of Huge Cajones fame) has been spearheading his anti privacy
agenda for years, as well as screaming about what a great person he was,
and why won't the world stop "stalking" him.
One of Gary's most frequent complaints was that he was being falsely
accused of being a registered sexual predator. He repeatedly challenged
folks to "go look at the court documents if you don't believe me". Well,
we did. And then we posted them:
ftp://archives.mfn.org
Apparently Gary's whining amounts to nothing. He has not only been
registered as a sexual predator in two states (a topic which *does* have
serious privacy implications, but is not germane here), but his famous
"just a kiss got me three years" turns out to have been quite a bit
more...
Since we have begun archiving public posts with this header, Burnore and
Company have produced *dozens* of complaints and telephone calls (does
this sound familiar - hugecajones?) to our upstream providers asking that
our connection be terminated. Fortunately, we have level-headed upstream
admins, who looked at what was going on - and then declined Mr. Burnore's
demands.
This "complaint" is a straw: there are no "anti-privacy" implications in
taking a UseNet post and maintaining it. There *is* a rather important
problem for the abuse domains such as Databasix (aka
UseNet-Performance-Art.org, Netbasix.com, and others): they have finally
run up against a wall they can't penetrate: their very own words!
The X-No-Archive Project at Missouri FreeNet is a little over two months
old. In that time we have recieved donations of both bandwidth and
equipment - this fact bothers Mr. Burnore quite a bit. He seems to
believe that any assistance to this project is somehow directed solely at
damaging his otherwise "pristine" reputation. <sigh>
We ask that you visit the archives and see for yourself:

They are quite slow right now, so please bear with us. The new T doesn't
go in until the 23rd, and the new CPU won't be here until the first: with
an old 233 taking approximately 5000 hits a day, it's under a bit of a
strain...

:capture full headers. I don't recall anyone making it against RemarQ.

:If this loon was working alone, I wouldn't be so worried. Like all
:loons, he'd eventually burn out and probably be alternatively ridiculed
:and ignored to the point of ineffectiveness long before then. But he's
:boasting that a T-1 has been donated to him on behalf of the
:"X-No-Archive Library Project".

:We all know that anonymous remailer operators and proxy services are
:often struggling for their lives. Scraping together nickels and dimes
:to keep bringing a secure means of anonymous communication to the
:masses. These are the real unsung heroes of privacy rights.
:
:Have any of them ever been the recipient of a free T-1? Why not?
:
:Who's bankrolling this kook? And why?
Yours,
J.A. Terranson

"Appearing before the Court for Violation of Probation is 40-year-old Gary
Burnore. ... He is allegedly in violation for failure to register [as a
sexual predator] failure to make [victim restitution] payments, failure to
participate in counseling and leaving the state of California without
permission."
...
"The defendant's behavior can only be characterized as manipulative and
self serving. It appears the defendant does not believe he needs to
follow the rules, but rather that he is a victim of system [sic] and can,
therefore, do as he pleases."
Gary Lee Burnore's Probation Officer describes why Gary needs a "moderate
County Jail sentence, to impress upon him the need to follow Court
Orders".
