Yes No

"Gift giving should be fun, but many people find it intimidating," says Peggy Post, author of Emily Post's Etiquette (16th edition) and other books on doing the right thing. In fact, she says, having fun choosing the gift makes it more likely to be a great gift. "The most important thing is to give in the spirit of giving, with a sense of fun and surprise." Other gift-giving tips from Peggy Post:

  1. If you find something perfect, don't put a price tag on it; some of the greatest treasures are inexpensive.
  2. Trust your own instincts about what the person might like.
  3. If you don't know the recipient, dig a little: ask their friends about their interests, hobbies, or what possessions they love.
  4. Put creative thought into a gift selection; "Something a little unusual will strike a chord."
  5. Buy gifts when you find them, "even if it's six months away from the next occasion."

Yesterday's necessity is today's multi-purpose objet d'art for Shirley Archer (brmtnhawk) of Haymarket, Virginia. "I've made them into planters, toilet paper holders, and even Easter baskets and candy dishes," Shirley says. The collection? Seventy-two chamber pots!

When nature called, in the days before indoor plumbing, folks reached for the lidded, single-handled 7- to 11-inch-diameter pots (children used small "potties"). A favorite of Shirley's is a dragon-handled, cream-colored beauty won on eBay for $93 ("but worth about $150"). Many pots matched dinnerware patterns featuring flowers, animals, and landscapes. Manufacturers include Johnson Brothers, Wedgwood, Staffordshire, and Buffalo Pottery; prices range from $3 to $3! ! ! ! ! 00 and up.
