Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 13:15:19 -0700 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Ronald Reisman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Volunteer Subjects to Participate in Experiments FYI: The age range (<=35yrs.) puts us out the running (or confining, as the case may be....) but this can be a fun experience for the right kind of personality. This is a real bona-fide mad-scientist type of experiment, so if you know of anyone who wants to be *very* uncomfortable for an extended period of time on 'human-rated centrifuge', this is their opportunity :-). --Ron P.S. : Wannabe astronauts love this! TO: Resident Staff FROM: Malcolm Cohen, Research Scientist SUBJECT: Volunteer Subjects to Participate in Experiments WANTED: Volunteer subjects to participate in experiments on the cardiovascular effects of long duration exposures to artificial gravity. These experiments will be conducted between July and September, 2000. Subjects will have to remain at Ames Research Center for two consecutive days during each week that data are collected. Subjects must be males, less than 5 feet 8 inches tall, and between 19 and 35 years old. California Workers' Compensation, or equivalent insurance, will cover all subjects, who will be thoroughly informed about the experimental procedures, and who will be selected following comprehensive medical examinations and personal interviews conducted at Government expense. As part of the screening process, all subjects will be evaluated for prior history of orthostatic intolerance (fainting), claustrophobia, anxiety, motion sickness, and fear of darkness. To participate, all subjects must undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation that will include a medical history and physical examination, cardiovascular testing, and a complete blood panel. Subjects must pass a drug screening and must have no history of orthostatic intolerance; they must also demonstrate satisfactory orthostatic responses on a lower body negative pressure tilt table and during gradual onset ramp acceleration profiles (maximum no higher than 7 Gz) in the human-rated centrifuge at Ames Research Center. The study requires that the subjects live in a confined chamber on the Ames 20-G centrifuge for consecutive periods of up to 22 hours while they experience rotations up to 14.3 RPM, and prolonged gravitational-inertial forces up to two times Earth's gravity. Individuals who are interested in participating as subjects in this study should contact Dr. Malcolm Cohen via telephone: (650) 604-6441, or mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. A pre-experiment subject briefing will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 30 in Building N-221A. All interested parties should plan to attend this meeting.
