A military intelligence officer, Timothy Webster, confidant of Lamo,
insisted Manning be reported. Both Webster and Lamo (an ex-con)
feared being charged with aiding Manning, facing greater punishment
than Manning due to each's having a hammer overhead.
Manning made a bad choice in who to trust -- WikiLeaks hardly better
than Lamo and Webster in protecting its own interest. Asymmetry in
leaking -- leaker held hostage, a la Edward Snowden, loses to
privileged publisher -- is the Catch 22. And why so many hackers (and
leakers) cut deals with authorities to snitch. Not unlike some here
and the White House who flog for Putin-grade authoritarianism.
Leakers are not to be trusted any more than hackers, so many are
plants, ego-driven, unscrupulous. Silence is golden when monetized
free speech, freedom of the press, legal representation, have become
entrapment.

It's interesting to note Adrian Lamo died on the 50th anniversary of
the My Lai massacre.
About the whistleblower in that incident, a recon helo pilot named
Hugh Thompson Jr. He didn't just blow the whistle, he crammed it
down their throats.
Ten years ago today I posted this about his actions at My Lai that
caused news that may have been the turning point for mainstream
American's view of the Vietnam War.
Thompson turned to Colburn and Andreotta (...his door gunners,
manning M60 machine guns. ) and told them that if the Americans
began shooting at the villagers or him, they should fire their M60
machine guns at the Americans:[4]
Y'all cover me! If these bastards open up on me or these people, you
open up on them. Promise me!"
