Although we have the individual right to make informed choices in relation to our own body, we also have a duty of care to one another to do our bit to limit the spread of deadly viruses when they appear. Viruses exist, and some are both transmissible and sometimes deadly. In the face of these very real problems and uncertainties around viral diseases, we have a duty of care to one another. Possible virus solution: Isolation: ------------------------------------------ - Isolation, or quarantine, is known to reduce the spread of viral diseases. Quarantine is a valid approach to handling a virus of uncertain or known deadliness. - Isolation is a valid choice for the individual, and a valid choice for a group of people, community or nation. - The parameters of such isolation are at present an open debate.. Possible virus solution: Face masks: ------------------------------------------ - Common face masks do not effectively limit or filter the air you breathe in while wearing the mask. Even the coveted "N95" masks do not necessarily fit well enough to sufficiently seal against your skin to limit the air you breathe to just that air which is filtered by the mask (for example depending on the bone shape of your face). Wearing such a (often deficient) face mask does less to prevent you getting an airborne virus, and more to limit -you- spreading the virus via airborne spittle/virus particulates. The reason is that face masks may allow air between the mask and you skin, bypassing the mask (which otherwise filters the air). Masks DO stop moisture and spittle particulates as you exhale (and more so, when you caugh or sneeze). Effectively reducing the virus particulates you may exhale, and the distance they travel if you caugh or sneeze, significantly limits the spread to others, which satisfies to a fair degree, ones duty of care to others especially in the face of uncertainty about whether or not you have been personally infected.
