Discord forwarded me to https://github.com/ArweaveTeam/arweave-js/issues/132 when I shared the issue.
It seems arweave has more layers than other chains. There are a number of quick fixes, but I don't understand the details of the underlying problem well to know when data could be lost. I'll likely add one of the quick fixes to git-remote-gitopia-mvp locally.
