looks like i worked on it in two separate places. slows things. but i might have days to make progress on this!
a number of files have changed locally. the fact that they're uncommitted implies they may not be stable. it can help a little to remember that i have strategies for engaging any possible design problem here. although i might note that some can be much harder than others; some are also easier than it feels like, by far.
