Boss stands in front of a shrink ray. When he gets only a few atoms big, it is hard to further shrink him, so he had commissioned a second mode of the shrink ray, which shrinks space itself around him rather than him.
This lets him shrink for a longer time. He switches the second mode on when things start sputtering in the first mode.
