I'm not a lawyer, have never been a lawyer, and am not
currently attending law school, so I'm not terrifically
interested in arguing the fine points of law re: logs or
anything else. I'm just stating what I, as a sysadmin, would
testify to if my logs were ever subpoenaed. I wasn't
intimating that I would alter them purposely -- shit
happens.
And I most definitely agree with Tim and Bill that the
best way to deal with this is thru technology. I'd be very
inclined to agree with not keeping logs at all, except that
I find them pretty useful for a number of things, but I'm
starting to think seriously about how long they need to be
kept -- probably not the month I keep them now, and I never
have kept router logs. And also thinking more about
encrypted file systems.
I'm really hoping someone will do the crypto-resierfs
thing soon.
