Malaysia: New controls on media. The Malaysian government on 16 January
rejected allegations of a 'plot' to discredit journalists on the Kuala
Lumpur English language daily, the Sun, to justify censorship. Media rights
groups allege that the journalists were given bogus information about a
supposed plot to assassinate the Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir
Mohamed. The publication of the story and its quick discrediting resulted
in the dismissal of 40 members of staff and the appointment of special
editorial advisors to vet all sensitive stories before publication.
