It's not just hardware. Supposedly (not owning, or knowning any who does,
an Aibo I can't verify) the kernel is encrypted in some manner. Apparently
at least one Aibo hacker of some repute broke the encryption and developed
tools. These compete directly with Sony's $500 Aibo development kit.
Though many Sony users (myself included) have promised to never purchase
Sony products again.
