The Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs,
Philip Ruddock, today announced the shortlist of architects to participate
in a design competition for new permanent immigration detention facilities.

The list comprises Sinclair Knight Merz Pty Limited & Crone Associates
(Vic) Pty Limited, Phillips Smith Conwell Architects Pty Ltd, Codd Stenders
Pty Ltd and a consortium comprising Guymer Bailey Architects, Sinclair
Knight Merz and Peter Hunt Architects.

Mr Ruddock added that the development of new detention facilities is a
great opportunity for the Government to advance the quality and style of
detention facilities in Australia.

"It also provides an opportunity for architectural organisations
participating in the design process to showcase their talents and
potentially earn international recognition in an environment where the
illegal movement of people around the world is a growing international
problem," Mr Ruddock said.

"I look forward to the results of the competition and wish all participants
well," Mr Ruddock said.
