Codes & Ciphers: Julius Ceasar, the Enigma, and the Internet
R. Churchhouse
ISBN ISBN 0-521-00890-5

This looks to be a great book for intermediate readers (or beginners who
have the math). It's nowhere near the completeness or complexity of
Applied Cryptography, but then for $20 who would expect it to. It consists
of chapters that cover particular sorts of crypto/code methods (eg Ch. 2
"Fom Julius Ceasar to simple substitution") with the basic(!) math
included in an appendix per each chapter.

If you haven't got the cash for Applied Cryptography and you're curious,
this may be the book for you. Oh yeah, has problems for each chapter w/
answers in the back.

ps This book is published by Cambridge, they seem to be publishing a spike
of good books on math, crypto, and other technical subjects at the
current time. You may also want to visit their list of currently
available items (sorry, no URL handy - Google is your friend ;).
