Chinese head to visit Australia A Chinese leader who played a key role in suppressing the Tiananmen Square protest 13 years ago is to visit Australia.
Li Peng, who is chairman of the National Peoples Congress, will visit Australia as part of a regional visit to Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Li Peng is coming to Australia to mark 30 years of diplomatic relations. Details of the trip have not been released but the ABC understands he will visit Sydney, Canberra and Cairns from September 15. It is Li Peng's first visit to Australia since the suppression of the Tiananmen protests. The decision reflects warm official ties between Australia and China, but is likely to be dogged by protests, particularly over Tibet and the banned religious sect Falun Gong. China rejects claims of dissident mistreatment China has denied accusations that it uses psychiatric hospitals to lock up political dissidents. The comments come after the World Psychiatric Association, meeting in Japan, decided to send a mission to China to investigate.
