Demos in Italy Against Governement Repression

Saturday 23 November saw tens of thousands take to the streets of Cosenza, for the release of arrested activists from the movement against global capital. Twenty people were arrested a week before, charged with thought crimes under legislation never repealed from the days of the Mussolini regime.
Coming only days after the European Social Forum conference in Florence, which saw hundreds of thousands march against war, the arrests have inspired widespread opposition within Italy. Public pressure has so far led to charges being dropped against two of those detained, while a number of others previously held in prison have been moved to house arrest.

A number of those arrested are involved in a range of movement media projects, including Indymedia. Many are also members of the militant workplace organisation COBAS. Meanwhile, COBAS members were amongst 70,000 FIAT workers on strike and demonstrating last Friday, challenging plans for large scale lay-offs at the crisis-ridden firm.
