'Gleeful' mosque arsonist jailed for six years
The man who torched a Brisbane mosque soon after the September 11 terrorist attacks has been sentenced to six years jail.
Brisbane District Court Judge Manus Boyce has called for tougher penalties for racially motivated crime.
Brisbane's Kuraby mosque was destroyed by fire 11 days after the terrorist attacks in the United States.
A jury found 24-year-old Terence George Hanlon guilty of the crime in October this year.
The court heard Hanlon had declared war on Muslims and displayed much glee as he watched the mosque burn down.
In sentencing, Judge Boyce said racial violence was a serious threat to the maintenance of a safe and decent society and called for amendments to Queensland's criminal code to provide more severe penalties for race crimes.
