Spies bungled Bali warnings: British panel
Britain's parliamentary spy watchdog has accused security services of a serious misjudgment for downplaying the threat to British interests in Indonesia a few days before the Bali nightclub bombing.
The Intelligence and Security Committee says intelligence chiefs had known the Al Qaeda network was present in Indonesia and that there had been a threat of attacks against British or US targets, including tourist nightclubs.
About 30 Britons and dozens of Australians were among those killed in the Bali bombings on October 12.
The committee says that at the time British intelligence judged the threat only as "significant", rather than a "high" or "imminent" risk.
The spy watchdog says the intelligence information to hand should have sent alarm bells ringing but agents seriously misjudged the threat.
