SAN SALVADOR - Two police officers were killed and more than 20 people injured when hundreds of prisoners rioted on Monday during a reorganization of El Salvador's main Mariona prison in the capital.
Keina de Escobar, spokesman for the country's prisons, told Reuters 23 people were hurt in the riot which broke out when 1,200 police, soldiers and prison guards tried to move some of the most dangerous inmates to other centers.
Escobar said police and soldiers fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the inmates who were armed. Most of the injured were police and guards, he said.
By late afternoon, the situation was calm and police and prisoners were negotiating a solution through the state human rights prosecutor, he noted.
