I just listened to Dec 11's Off The Hook. There where bits and pieces of news that where not covered in any post on the 2600 website about the Mike Maginnis story. Past news postings from the 2600 site to get up to speed: http://www.2600.com/news/display/display.shtml?id=1441 http://www.2600.com/news/display/display.shtml?id=1455
Notes from http://www.2600.com/offthehook/rafiles/2002/121102.mp3 : * The Denver PIO refused to come on the OTH program and set the record straight. Said something to the tune of "I refuse to help you guys cover your asses". A person within the police system they where refereed to (also I believe they said the author of the email found at http://www.politechbot.com/p-04239.html) did not return their calls. * From what OTH was able to find out from the hotel staff Cheney was indeed only there on Monday (the incident with MM happened on Tuesday) as the above email claimed * MM stated that the hotel had "Army Rangers" in front of it. What was actually going on was a Air and National Guard Senior Leadership conference at that hotel that ran the whole week, and VP had spoken there on Monday. Perhaps this was also a cause for some confusion on his part * The Denver mint is also near the hotel in question. * MM is not talking to anyone at this point. Hate notes where posted to his door. * If this was so bogus of a story, and we are free to take pictures of the hotel the VP is staying in, why aren't the cops coming forth and saying so. * The mainstream media (CNN, etc) where talking with the OTH/2600 crowd about the story, but wouldn't do a story themselves without a smoking gun. * One of the callers (Rebel, who they usually shoo off the phone quickly because he's a moron) reminded them that people at a Wash DC 2600 meeting one night in 1992 were gathered up by the mall security and had all their names taken down. The Secret Service was behind this, but denied this until the 2600 crew got a statement on tape by one of the mall security saying this was true. No one in the DC 2600 wanted to start a lawsuit because they were afraid (see Bernie S.'s story where he was singled out by the SS because of the pictures of them that he showed on a local newscast, specifically ones of an agent picking his nose. This ended up with a farce of a trial that landed Bernie in jail. See the video "Freedom Downtime" for his story or http://www.2600.com/law/bernie.html) * One caller mentioned this press release (I think, the called didn't read off this url, but it seems to match) from the CO ACLU: http://www.aclu-co.org/news/pressrelease/release_spyfiles.htm "In a news conference held today, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Colorado (ACLU) charged that the Denver Police Department is monitoring and recording the peaceful protest activities of Denver-area residents and keeping files on the expressive activities of law-abiding advocacy organizations." All in all I think the OTH guys treated this sceptically but allowed the guy to have a voice when others didn't appear to be listening. The Denver PD are acting a little strange (one email to one reporter??) myers
