Dozens detained in Guantanamo may be innocent
'Dozens of detainees are Afghan and Pakistani nationals described in classified intelligence reports as farmers, taxi drivers, cobblers and labourers. Some were low-level fighters conscripted in the weeks before the collapse of the Islamist Taliban militia that once held 90 per cent of Afghanistan and sheltered Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda fighters before the war against terrorism began last fall. None of the 59 met US screening criteria for determining who should be in Guantanamo, military sources said. But all were transferred anyway, for reasons that still baffle and frustrate intelligence officers nearly a year after the first group of detainees arrived'
