Chilean marines assess armoured personnel carriers
The 4,500-strong Chilean Marine Corps is seeking to acquire both
tracked
and wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APCs) as part of its
modernisation
plans, following a government decision to increase participation
in UN-sponsored
peacekeeping operations.

Giat unveils proposals for Leclerc tank upgrade
Giat Industries late last month revealed some of its proposals for
upgrading
the French Army's Leclerc main battle tank (MBT).
The Délégation Générale pour
l'Armament is
currently looking to upgrade the MBT in the 2015 timeframe in
order to
fully incorporate it within the the network-centric Bulle
Operationnelle
Aéroterrestre (BOA) concept.

Vektor launcher and gun fit bill for South Africa
The South African Army has completed operational testing and
evaluation
of Vektor's 40mm automatic grenade launcher (AGL) and a modified
SS77
7.62mm light machine gun and is now studying its future anti-tank
weapons
requirement.

Canada develops technologies for hypervelocity missile
Defence Research & Development Canada Valcartier (DRDC
Valcartier)
is conducting its High-Energy Missile (HEMi) Technology
Demonstration
(TD) to test and evaluate candidate subsystems for a small
hypervelocity
weapon that could provide light combat vehicles weighing
approximately
20t with the firepower traditionally associated with main battle
tanks.
The establishment is exploiting its in-house expertise in the
fields of
propulsion, aerodynamics, guidance, control, lethality and
structure,
together with its integration experience (which it regards as
being vital
to success). It is also collaborating with specialized partners in
industry
and academia.

DSTO trials rapid mine clearing system
The Weapons Systems Division of Australia's Defence Science and
Technology
Organisation (DSTO) has commenced initial trials of the Rapid
Route and
Area Mine Neutralisation System (RRAMNS) under the A$50-75 million
(US$28-42m)
Phase 2 of Project Land 133, which seeks to provide the Australian
Army
with the capability to rapidly detect and neutralize landmines
buried
in and on the surface of sealed/unsealed roads, tracks and within
specific
areas, such as landing zones and airfields.
