DSA reveals NZ Protector package
Comprising Damen Shipyards, Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (both of
The Netherlands)
and Australia's ADI Limited, the newly-formed consortium of DSA
has revealed
details of its bid for the Royal New Zealand Navy's (RNZN) NZ$500
million
(US$270m) Project Protector (see IDR July 2002, p4). DSA has
confirmed
it is offering a new multipurpose ship design based on the Dutch
Enforcer-class
landing platform dock as the bid centerpiece, which, if selected,
would
replace the frigate HMNZS Canterbury in 2005. Several offshore
patrol
vessels (OPV) and inshore patrol boats (IPB) are also being
offered.

Commando conversion for RN anti-submarine Sea King helicopters
Six Westland Sea King HAS.6 anti-submarine warfare (ASW)
helicopters of
the Royal Navy (RN) are currently undergoing conversion to Mk 6C
commando
assault configuration, the UK armed forces minister, Adam Ingram,
told
the House of Commons in December 2002.

Radars compete for Ka-27 'Helix' upgrade
Two Russian radars - Phazotron's Kopyo-A and Leninets' Lira - are
competing
to replace the present Initsiativa-2KM radar as part of a new
search-attack
system for the Kamov Ka-27 'Helix-A' shipborne anti-submarine
warfare
helicopter and its Ka-28 export version. The radar is intended to
detect
surface and air targets and direct guided armament to the detected
targets,
as well as for navigational purposes.

UK exercises personnel rescue command
The UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Commando Helicopter Force (CHF)
conducted its
first exercise of a new Joint Personnel Recovery (JPR) capability
last
month. This is scheduled to become available to support UK and
NATO operations
by June.

USN prepares for Puerto Rico range closure
The US Navy (USN) will use new simulation technology and enhance
training
ranges on the eastern coast of the USA and Gulf of Mexico to make
up for
the loss of its live-fire training and bomb range facilities on
the island
of Vieques, Puerto Rico, officials said last week.

Romania, UK conclude Type 22 frigate deal
Romania and the UK have signed a government-to-government
agreement to
reactivate and upgrade two ex-Royal Navy (RN) Type 22 Batch 2
frigates
for transfer to the Romanian Navy.
