Parent Tips: Be your child's first source of information Encouraging your children to ask questions makes it easier for them to ask questions when they are older. By answering questions with honesty and openness, you can create a relationship of mutual trust and respect that can prevent your child from developing unsafe habits or taking unnecessary risks. ARAcontent.com ------------------- 2. Did you know - Backpacks don't just hurt the back. A study pooled data on 247 students, ages 6-18 years, where backpack injuries were recorded during 1999 and 2000. The most common injury location was the head/face (22%) followed by the hand (14%), wrist/elbow (13%), shoulder (12%) and foot/ankle (12%). The back ranked sixth (11%). Of these back injuries, 59% were associated with carrying a backpack. The most common mechanism for injury was tripping over the backpack (28%), followed by wearing (13%), and getting hit by the backpack (13%)." Altogether, 89% of backpack injuries in the analysis did not involve the back. Safety Tip - Think "Up" One-year-olds quickly become adept at climbing, so put poisons and other hazards behind child-locked doors, and not just up high. Leave countertop appliances like toasters unplugged. Buy scald guards for faucets, or turn down the setting on your hot water heater to no higher than 120F to avoid burning a child who can reach the kitchen sink or bathroom faucets. www.Child.com ------------------- 4. Ross, D.C. - Editor http://www.WestAshleyHealth.org/doctorsoffice.shtml 10 Steps to Better Sleep Nothing better than waking up alive, alert and awake! Here are a few tips that might help. 1. Keep regular hours by going to bed and waking up around the same time. 2. Develop a "sleep ritual" by doing the same things each night. This cues your body that it's time to settle down for the night. 3. Exercise regularly, but not too close to bed time. This relieves tension. 4. Unwind early by dealing with worries and distractions several hours before bedtime. 5. Make sleep a priority even when you're tempted to stay up late. 6. Sleep comfortably. Make sure you have a supportive mattress with adequate foundation. 7. Use a cervical (neck) pillow. 8. Create a cool, quiet, dark and restful sleep environment. 9. Avoid alcohol shortly before bedtime. This disrupts and causes fragmented sleep. 10. Cut down on stimulants like caffeine during the evening.
