SIXTEEN military and civilian personnel were evacuated from the Richmond air force base today after a package containing a suspicious powder was found.

The staff were decontaminated at the scene before being treated at the base hospital as a precaution.
Air force, fire, police and ambulance officers attended the scene along with the NSW Forensic Scientific Group and fire brigade hazardous materials workers.

A police and fire service investigation was under way tonight and the 16 people affected were under observation.

The investigation was expected to take several days.
