Police defend Aboriginal tent embassy raid
Police have defended their actions at the Aboriginal tent embassy in Canberra this morning where two people were arrested after police were asked to remove an illegal structure.
Seventy police officers were involved in the pre-dawn raid at the tent embassy where a six-metre high A-frame was dismantled.
Police say they were there to support heavy machinery and keep the peace.
Some officers wore riot gear but superintendent Charmaine Quade says that was necessary.
"It wasn't until issues had escalated - for example, one of our police vehicles windows had been smashed, there was threat with spears, there was also bushes that were set alight and waved in members faces," superintendent Quade said.
"But five members were deployed with gear to try and contain that."
Two people were arrested - one for breaching the peace and another for possession of a dangerous weapon, a spear.
The latter will appear in court later today.
