USN tests new capabilities planned for SSGNs
The US Navy (USN) and its contractors have conducted a series of
tests
to demonstrate technologies and operating concepts in support of
the service's
plan to convert four Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarines into
multirole
SSGNs at the same time as they undergo their mid-life refuelings.
The
first is due to enter service in 2007. On 14 January, the USS
Florida
- one of four boats slated for conversion - successfully launched
a Tomahawk
Block III cruise missile vertically from one of the tubes that
normally
house Trident ballistic missiles. The unarmed and instrumented
round,
fired in the Gulf of Mexico, navigated to the range at Eglin Air
Force
Base in Florida for recovery.

USS Cyclone to be transferred to the Philippines
Negotiations are underway for the modification and transfer of the
former
US Navy (USN) coastal patrol vessel, USS Cyclone (PC 1), to the
Philippines
government. Although final funding profiles of the Foreign
Military Sales
(FMS) case remain to be determined, the vessel may receive a
'stern ramp'
modification upgrade known as the Combat Craft Retrieval System
(CCRS)
and previously applied to four of the USN's Cyclone-class fleet.

Suez transit may break Turkish deadlock
Frustrated by the continued delay in receiving permission from
Turkey
to offload an estimated 30 ships carrying equipment for the 4th
Infantry
Division (4th ID), well-informed Western diplomatic sources in
Ankara
have told Jane's Defence Weekly that the US government has
notified the
Egyptian government that these ships may pass through the Suez
Canal to
sail to the Gulf.

Raytheon, teamed with BAE Systems, has won out in the competition

Uneasy alliance forms for UK CVF
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has selected a design developed
by Thales
as the basis for the Royal Navy's Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF)
programme.
But by deciding that BAE Systems should be given overall
responsibility
for delivering the programme as prime contractor - with Thales
providing
the whole ship design as so-called key supplier - the MoD now
faces the
potentially fraught task of brokering an agreement between the two
companies
to establish a tripartite alliance within which the MoD itself
will also
be a risk-sharing partner.

The US Navy (USN) has conducted a key trial to prove the concept

conversions
during the four-day 'Giant Shadow' exercise, which ended on 28
January
2003.
