Labor says war illegal

LABOR today declared it would be illegal to go to war with Iraq without United Nations backing.

Opposition foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd said unless the United States could prove it had been attacked by Iraq, or was about to be, it would be illegal to take military action without the go-ahead from the UN Security Council.
"It is illegal if we're talking about collective action under the collective action provisions of the UN Security Council," he told ABC-TV.

Aussie soldiers fear Iraq backlash

SOME Australian troops in the Gulf have told of their fears of a Vietnam War-style backlash against them if a US-led war against Iraq goes ahead.

They are worried about opinion polls showing more Australians oppose a Gulf war without UN backing, than opposed the Vietnam conflict.
Air force squadron leader Melanie, 31, of Launceston, Tasmania, said she hoped public divisions on the issue did not mean a lack of support for the troops.


"People obviously feel strongly on both sides," she said.

"Some of my friends have told me they think this operation is wrong and we shouldn't be here. Even my family is torn on it.

"But just before we left, people were comparing this to the mood over Vietnam and it was pretty uncomfortable to hear that
