Without the fleet of Admiral Comte de Grasse at Yorktown, and the assistance of the Marquis de Lafayette, the revolution would have surely been lost and Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, Madison and the rest would have hanged at London Tower. Maybe we would be more accurate to consider our role for the French in WW1 and 2 to be in compensation for our freedom from the British.
