SOUTH Australian MPs have voted to ban the establishment of a nuclear waste dump in the state's far north.

The Bill, passed by the state's upper house today, also bans the transportation of nuclear waste from other states on SA roads.
While the federal government could override a local ban and build a low-level repository at its proposed site at Woomera, Environment Minister John Hill said the legislation passed today would send a strong message to Canberra.
He said there were also further legal avenues available to the state government to prevent the dump going ahead.
"Today was a great day for South Australia because the parliament has finally agreed to the government Bill to ban a radioactive waste dump going ahead in South Australia," Mr Hill told AAP.

Woomera is a rocket range as well so this is a relief.
