Ominous signs for coalition in battle for Umm Qasr

US and British marines, backed by tanks and air strikes, fought for the third day on Sunday to secure full control of the Iraqi frontier town of Umm Qasr, in a small but politically significant battle that has become an embarrassment for the invasion force.

Umm Qasr, the port at the head of the Gulf through which the coalition has announced it will bring urgent humanitarian aid to the people of Iraq, is home to just 4,000 people and lies within sight of the Kuwaiti border.

The sound of machine gun exchanges and bombing raids by Royal Air Force Harriers was clearly audible on Sunday from Kuwaiti territory, in spite of repeated official assurances in recent days that control of the port had been or was about to be secured.

'Liberated' Iraqis Question US Motives

They were unforgettable images: Residents of this southern Iraqi town openly welcoming coalition forces. They danced in the streets as a picture of Saddam Hussein was torn down.

That was yesterday.

Traveling unescorted into Safwan today, I got a far different picture. Rather than affection and appreciation, I saw a lot of hostility toward the coalition forces, the United States and President Bush.

Some were even directed towards the media. (It was the first time I heard somebody refer to me as a "Satan.")

Despite the shocking disparity and unfairness of these two bullies, there are signs that the crusaders are being spooked by the 'island hopping' tactic.Like Denikins march toward Moscow their flanks are wide open for hit and run guerrilla strikes.Every day Iraq lasts is a great victory and even a 'defeat' will hardly be the end of the story. This criminal colonial war of aggression will almost certainly lead to the collapse of Govts in the reigon and possibly in the UK and even the Great Satan itself. Another 'victory' like this will be the certain death of Amerikkka.(and not a moment to soon.)
